Media Interview Skills
Having a spokesperson with good media interview skills is vital to any business, both in goods times and in bad.
In times of crisis, such as poor financial performance or environmental disaster, your organisation may come under a barrage of questioning from journalists, many of which will want to jump on and exaggerate everything you say in order to sensationalise the story even more. Being able to keep a cool head under such pressure is vital to ensure you put your company's message across clearly and precisely, which will serve to reassure customers, shareholders and employees. Having a spokesperson who appears like a frightened rabbit in the headlights when dealing with the media gives a poor impression of your organisation.
But being able to perform well in a media interview is not only of use during the bad times. If your company has just designed and launched a new product that will revolutionise the market, it won't make much of an impact if nobody knows about it! It is vital that you use the various media channels to spread the word and attract potential customers. Similarly, if your company has exceeded performance targets, or done something to enhance it's reputation such as reducing carbon emissions or making a large charitable donation, use the media to get the message across to people. A good image and well-known name/brand will undoubtedly lead to more business and greater revenue.
Is media training only necessary for large organisations?
Not at all. Whilst it's true that if you're a small business with a handful of employees you're unlikely to ever get the world's press hammering at your door, there is much that can be done through the media on a smaller, localised scale. If you're a specialist in your particular field, you may suddenly find yourself being asked for your opinion on a topic being covered by the local television or radio news, which can be a fantastic opportunity to get free publicity for your company if you perform well in the interview. On the flip side, if your company does something to anger local residents, whilst it my not be front page news in the national papers, you may find yourself having to deal with awkward questions from local journalists, as well as fielding questions from the angry local residents themselves!
For smaller companies who do not have the budget for a large scale, bespoke media training programmes, the open courses below are perfect for putting one or two people from your organisation on and ensuring that they have the media skills necessary so you are prepared for both good times and bad!
